Sport fishing in Acapulco does not correspond to the bucolic image of a solitary man trying his luck casting a line into the waters of a lagoon or river, here it is different; here you practice offshore fishing, hence the images and senses are other: roaring waves and larger fishes, such as the sailfish, the bass, gilthead and Skipjack Tuna, (Katsuwonus pelamos), amongst other coveted specimens.

Deep-sea fishing is the one most often practiced in Acapulco, being the best season between November and May. It is not complicated to rent a vessel (ships, sailboats, motorboats, pedal rafts and canoes) and all the necessary equipment to set to sea in this renowned tourist destination.

Amongst the best known places, Puerto Marques - a bay 15 kilometres south of Acapulco -, Tecomate - a place surrounded by mangroves 68 kilometres away -, and the Chautengo Lagoon - 11 kilometres to the southeast, stand out.

FISHING IN BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR

The waters of Baja California Sur are a total lure for fishing devotees, who can catch excellent groupers, horse mackerels, corvine, wahoo fish of the Pacific, yellow-finned basses, soles, mahi-mahis, wahoos and golden tuna fish, amongst others.

Authorities have implemented a program called “catch and let go” in order to protect the great number of exotic species existing in the Sea of Cortes, which consists on returning the captured fishes to the water, preventing in this manner the damaging of the fragile ecosystem of the zone.

Fishing tournaments take place in Baja California Sur throughout the year. The main one is that of Cabo San Lucas in October, which gathers sportspeople coming from all over the world that set off after the blue and black marlins onboard 200 fishing boats. The prize is of one million US dollars.

FISHING IN CANCUN

Rod, line and hook devotees will find more than one natural space where to totally develop their activity in Cancun and the surrounding area. Be it offshore, at lakes or bays, the options are multiple and they all come to choosing the place, preparing the bait, and waiting for the hard tug of the prey.

If you choose fishing offshore you can rent boats such as a Bertram or the type of, perfect for specialised adventures. The most apparent places in Cancun are the areas adjacent to Isla de Mujeres and offshore in front of the Hotel Zone.

The best season for fishing in open sea is from April to September, months in which sailfishes, marlins, dolphin-fishes or dorados, wahoos, and blue-finned tunas, amongst other specimens, are abundant.

Those rather fishing in calmer and shallower currents can cast their hooks into the bays and lagoons in Cancun, rich in shads, basses, ray’s breams and bonefish (.Albula vulpes)

The best places are the lower parts of the Bay of Mujeres and the Nichupté Lagoon.

FISHING IN LA PAZ

There are enormous pelagic fishes in La Paz – which are called like this because they swim close to the surface – such as the striped, blue, black and golden marlins, roosterfish and tuna fish that will test the dexterity and perseverance of those who find this to be a fascinating activity.

There are yachts and cruisers especially conditioned for sports activities weighing anchor in La Paz.

It is not necessary to go off shore in order to capture a good specimen in the sea of La Paz; moreover, it is possible to catch them even from the shore with a little luck.

The Bisbee Circuit, an important fishing tournament with partakers coming from all over the world, takes place every year in September.
