ROCK SCALING IN GUADALAJARA

More important that reaching the summit is to overcome every obstacle that appears during the ascension. A delicious task that means climbing along slippery and irregular rocky walls, for rock scaling is a sport of its own, with its own techniques and gear, in spite that many regard it just as the anteroom of mountaineering.

Guadalajara has a series of circuits perfect for the practice of rock scaling, an activity that helps tempering the body and the spirit alike. You will find gear rentals and specialised guides in the city.

The places most visited by rock scaling devotees are:
  • El Diente: it has more than 200 routes for the practice of boulder type of scaling, a modality that consists on using only arms and legs without the aid of ropes. The rock is of the granite type, pretty rough thus provoking several scratches on sportspeople. El Diente is visited by both experts and rookies due to the great variety of routes of different classes it presents, with walls up to 60 metres high. It is located in the Community of Rio Blanco, in the Municipality of Zapopán, at only 8 kilometres north of the Peripheral of Guadalajara. It is recommendable to go in the company of someone else or during weekends, when there are several sportspeople in the area, in order to avoid any inconvenience.

  • La Hidro: it presents more than 30 routes of sportive style, almost all of them with a further degree in difficulty than those at El Diente. The rock is basaltic; therefore, rock scaling devotees would not suffer scratches.
It is located in the vicinity of the hydroelectric plant of the Town of Mesa Colorada, in the Ravine of Oblatos, to the north of the Peripheral of Guadalajara, Municipalities of Tonala and Zapotlanejo.

  • El Cuajo: it is a new scaling zone that presents close to 25 routes of all classes and with protective gear. Its walls are of basaltic rock and some of them reach heights of up to 80 metres, rock giants surrounded by generous vegetation.
Bear in mind the following recommendations before visiting El Cuajo: do not climb at noon because the sun is too hot and it absorbs your energy toasting your back on the way. Carry abundant water with you in order to avoid dehydration, and keep away from these rocky walls if rain is falling, for unlike El Diente and La Hidro, rocks can fall off in here. It is situated in the Town of San Lorenzo.
