CHIHUAHUA
TRANSPORT
Moving around the urban face of Chihuahua is not a complicated task, on the contrary, it is pretty simple and, most of all, safe; therefore, travellers will be able to go through the streets with no major inconveniences onboard the units dedicated to the public transportation of passengers (buses and taxis), a system that operates under the modality of route concessions to firms or individuals grouped in an independent manner.
There are 67 transportation routes in the city, which are constituted by 523 buses (they are called camiones - trucks - in Mexico); regarding the taxis, there are 880 registered vehicles in Chihuahua, with 74 authorised stops on strategic spots of the urban area.
The main routes or axial roads of the city covered by the units of public transportation, are the streets and avenues of the Urban Centre, the corridor of Universidad Avenue and that of Flores Magon Avenue, the industrial complex of Chihuahua and the industrial zone of Nombre de Dios, to the north.
According to investigations realised in the past few years, it has been determined that the public transportation system of the city represents just 47 percent of the total means of transportation used by the people to move around, an index way below the national average, which rises up to 75 percent.
Besides its good infrastructure in the urban ambit, Chihuahua has excellent ways of communication, both communal and at an interstate level, such as the Pan American Highway. There is also a series of rural roads that allows connecting with other cities within the state, such as Cuauhtémoc, Delicias, Ahumada and Aldama; all these routes are covered by 19 lines offering transportation service nationwide.
