USEFUL INFORMATION

What items of clothing should I pack?
Those visiting Guadalajara, the City of the charros and mariachis, must be prepared to face agitated days of coming and going, therefore it is advisable to "feed" your suitcases with comfortable clothes and footwear so that you can move around more freely.
On the other hand and due to the spring weather prevailing in the Capital of Jalisco, it is not necessary to bring heavy coats or sweaters. A light jacket or jumper would do to endure the cold hours; although, do not fail to pack a raincoat or umbrella if you are travelling between June and September, for there are sporadic downpours mostly in the afternoons, which intensify during July and August.
The use of casual clothes is common at nightclubs and other shows, and only a handful of restaurants require formal dressing as an indispensable requisite to be admitted in.

Where can I ask for tourist information?
In case you need tourist orientation in Guadalajara you must go to the Secretariat of Tourism of the State of Jalisco, located on 102 Morelos Street, Tapatía Plaza, which opens Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 hours till 20:00 hours; and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 hours till 13:00 hours.
You can also visit the office of the Secretary of Tourism (Sectur), on 50 Paseo Degollado, Tapatía Plaza. Office hours are from Mondays to Fridays from 9:00 hours till 15:00 hours.

What is the population like?
The tapatíos (meaning belonging to or coming from Guadalajara) are known worldwide for their kindness and amiable mood, characteristics that will make you feel like at home, or maybe even better, and this is no cliché but a reality that is verified by the huge numbers of foreigners who came to Guadalajara just for a short visit, and ended up staying for good after unveiling her charms. This is the best demonstration of the good vibration and cordiality of the tapatíos.

  • Which are the working hours at offices and shopping malls?
Like is the case in most of Mexican cities, offices work Mondays to Fridays from 9:00 hours till 19:00 hours, approximately. However, they usually interrupt their service between 13:00 and 15:00 hours for lunch break. Just a few offices work on Saturdays and that few doing so close their doors at 13:00 hours.
Regarding shopping malls and stores in general, they work Mondays through Saturdays from 9:00 hours till 20:00 hours. Just a few open their doors on Sundays, so be advised and plan accordingly.

Will I have any problem communicating with my country?
Non whatsoever, because Guadalajara has a communication system that can be catalogued as efficient for being the second largest City in Mexico; nevertheless, bear in mind that the telephone service is usually more expensive here than in other countries, so you may consider making collect phone calls.
If you disregard this possibility you can use the Ladetel phone cards for long distance calls, which can be used on the many phone booths scattered all over the City. In this way you can better control your expense. If you decide to call from your hotel room remember that rates are higher at lodges and the like.
On the other hand, there are public places where to access the Internet in Guadalajara known as cybercafés, an economic option to communicate abroad and to navigate through the web of webs. Likewise, most of the hotels offer this service to their guests. Ask at your hotel's reception desk.
Another alternative is the traditional post service, cheap though rather slow. Their offices work Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 till 19:00 hours and from 9:00 till 13:00 hours on Saturdays.

Is it easy to drive in the City?
Guadalajara is a City constantly testing the drivers' dexterities with its four million inhabitants and hundreds of thousands of vehicles. Traffic jams during rush hours are one of the main problems the tapatíos are yet to solve, and if we add to this the reckless way some people drive, the little respect they have for traffic rules and the bad conditions of some roads, we have a rather discouraging scenario.

If in spite of all these you decide to drive in the Capital of the State of Jalisco, do it with precaution and avoid doing it during rush hours.

What do I need to rent a car?
You need to be over 21 years old, have a valid driver license and an international credit card. Besides, you will have to produce your passport. The most renowned car-renting firms have offices in the City. It is recommendable to purchase an insurance covering car accidents.

What is the voltage of the electric power?
Electric power in Guadalajara is of 110 volts and 60 cycles, the same power output used in the United States and Canada. If you have appliances working with 220 volts ask for adaptors at your hotel's reception desk. Also take into consideration that outlets have flat slots.
