Will I have any problem exchanging my dollars or paying with them?
No, you can buy and sell foreign currency at the bank and money exchange offices in Merida with no inconveniency whatsoever, especially dollars, US and Canadian, and euros. The exchange rate is free and it may vary a few points from one day to another.
It is not advisable to exchange dollars or euros in the black market, for although the rates are higher than those at the exchange offices; you take the chance of getting counterfeits.
Will my credit cards be accepted?
Yes, their use in Merida is well spread at shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, travel agencies and other establishments, being the most accepted ones Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
Nevertheless, it is recommendable to consult if your credit card will be taken before consuming. It is also advisable to carry with you some cash on local currency for minor expenses.
On the other hand, it is very easy to find ATMs in the capital of the State of Yucatan, especially in commercial and financial areas. These work 24 hours a day.
Is it advisable to carry traveller checks?
Yes, because it is an easy, practical and reliable way of getting cash. Traveller checks can be cashed in with no inconveniency whatsoever at bank offices; besides, there are accepted at some hotels, travel agencies and commercial establishments; however, they are cashed in for less than the nominal amount.
It is recommendable to have them issued by renowned and prestigious financial institutions and for rather large sums of money.
How much should I tip?
It is not compulsory to do it; however, it is customary to tip between 10 and 15 percent of the total bill, without taking into account the Tax to the Aggregated Value (IVA), at restaurants, bars, discotheques, and nightclubs.
Regarding luggage haulers, bellboys and parking valets in Merida, it is expected to tip them with one or two dollars for their services.
