Money and Tips

Will I have any problem exchanging my money or paying with dollars?
The "Sultana of the North", as is also known Monterrey, is a modern and cosmopolitan city where you can sell and buy foreign currencies with no major inconvenience, at bank offices and specialised houses.
The rate of the US dollar is free and may vary a few points from one day to another; it is also possible to exchange euros.
It is not recommendable to buy or sell dollars or euros in the black market; although the rates are higher than at the exchange offices, you take the risk of getting counterfeits.
On the other hand, in Monterrey travellers will have the chance of paying with dollars and euros in most hotels, restaurants and shopping malls; however, take into consideration that you will get a lower exchange rate.

Will my credit cards be accepted?
All credit cards are amply accepted in Mexico, save for Discovery; however, before consuming or paying for a service, ask if your credit card will be taken, or look for a sticker indicating that yours will be accepted on the door or in any other visible place.
The use of credit cards is restricted in small establishments and in the state's rural areas; therefore, it is recommendable to carry local currency to pay for small services, such as taxi rides.

  • Safety
  • Is it recommendable to bring traveller checks?
Yes, because they are a practical, safe and easy way of getting cash; bank offices in Monterrey fully accept them, same as the most important hotels and travel agencies in the city.
It is recommendable to have the checks issued by entities of international prestige.

    How much should I tip?
Although it is not an obligation, it is usual to tip 10 percent of the bill - without considering the tax to the aggregated value (IVA) - at the restaurants; this amount might augment or diminish according to the kind and quality of the service you get.
It is not usual to tip taxi drivers, but we do so with bellboys and the parking valets at hotels and restaurants.
