The land of the Jarochos, name given to the people of Veracruz, is located on the coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico, at 405 kilometres from the capital of the country.
Anytime of the year and any means of transportation is good to come and visit the city; though if you accept a tip, come to the capital of the Jarochos in February, in the midst of the lavish and renowned carnival. Due to the celebrations involved in this feast, Veracruz is regarded as the most colourful and cheerful land in Mexico.
Before travelling to Veracruz, bear in mind the following recommendations:
- By air: the General Heriberto Jara Corona International Airport of Veracruz, gets non-stop domestic flights coming from the main Mexican cities, such as Monterrey (capital of the State of Nuevo Leon), Villahermosa (capital of the State of Tabasco), Mérida (capital of the State of Mérida), Cancun (in the State of Quintana Roo), Mexico DF (capital of the country), Tampico (capital of the State of Tamaulipas), Oaxaca (capital of the State of Oaxaca), and Huatulco (in the State of Oaxaca).
In the installations of the international airport, travellers will find the following services: car rentals, authorised taxis, public parking area, tourist information, hotel reservations, restaurant, snack-bar, handicrafts' shops and bank offices.
There are two air terminals for domestic flights in the State of Veracruz, besides the Heriberto Jara Airport: El Tajín, in the Municipality of Tihuatlán, close to the City of Poza Rica; and Canticas, in the region of Coatzacoalcos - Cosoleacaque - Minatitlán; in addition, there are 31 airstrips.
- By land: coming from the City of Mexico, the capital of the country, you can take the route Mexico - Puebla - Xalapa, or the route Mexico - Orizaba - Veracruz. The trip by car takes 4 hours approximately; check your engine before setting off and avoid driving at night if possible.
If you do not have a vehicle, opt for the buses that cover the distance; transportation firms offer their passengers first class and economic services. In Mexico DF, you need to board the units departing from the Eastern Bus Terminal for Passengers (TAPO), located on 200 Zaragoza Street.
