VERACRUZ
MONEY
Will I have any problem exchanging my dollars or paying with them?
No, you can buy and sell foreign currencies with no problem at all at the bank and exchange offices of Veracruz. The exchange rate is free and may vary a few points from one day to another; it is also possible to exchange euros.
It is advisable not to exchange your money in the black market; although the rates are higher, you take the chance of getting counterfeits.
On the other hand, most of the commercial establishments in Veracruz (especially those in the tourist sector) accept dollars and euros with no problem. However, it is always practical to carry some local currency with you for small expenses and for your tours to remote zones.
Will my credit cards be accepted?
Yes, their use is well spread in Veracruz, the first Mexican port; the main commercial establishments accept them with no problem whatsoever. The most used are: Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club and American Express.
If you have any doubt, ask if your card will be taken before consuming or contracting a service. However, always carry some cash with you, especially if you move away from the urban zone; it also comes handy for small purchases or to pay for some services.
Is it advisable to bring traveller's checks?
Yes, because they are a practical, safe and easy way of getting cash. They can be cashed-in at the bank offices of the city.
It is recommendable to have the checks issued by known and prestigious firms and preferable for large amounts.
If they are stolen, crooks would not be able to cash them in, since the bank offices ask for an ID and a signature in order to complete the transaction.
How much should I tip?
Although it is not enforced, it is usual to leave a tip of 10 to 15 percent of the final bill at bars and restaurants.
