SAFETY

Can I feel safe in the City of Veracruz?
Veracruz is a safe and amiable city; however, it is always wise to take certain precautionary measures, amongst which we have the following:
  • Keep your wallet in a safe place and carry with you only the money you deem necessary for the day's expenses and no more than one credit card: it is advisable to carry a photocopy of your passport as well.
  • Do not wear too much jewellery (leave them in the hotel's safety box), they could be a temptation for snatchers. Mind your purse as well.
  • Be extremely careful with your photo and video cameras. It is advisable to avoid showing them at all times and using them in seemingly unsafe places. Put them back in their cases right after using them.
  • It is better to go out with someone; if you are travelling on your own, try not to get to far from the barrio neighbourhoods you all ready know, and avoid dark and isolated places during the night. Before setting off on a tour, ask at the hotel if the place you are bound for is safe.
  • If you wish to take a taxi, especially at night, it is recommendable to call the radio taxi firms. Another acceptable option is to take the vehicles parked at the doors of the hotels.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol on the street for your own safety. On the other hand, do not carry with you illegal substances under any circumstance. Mexican police are usually stricter that US police regarding these cases, and embassies rather not intervene when the arrest is due to drug trafficking.
