VILLAHERMOSA

HOW TO GET THERE

Baptised as the "Emerald of the Southeast", Villahermosa, capital of the State of Tabasco, is the most developed and modern city in this part of Mexico. Due to its economic, commercial and tourist importance, it has an international airport and an efficient road system that connects it with the main cities of Mexico and with neighbouring Guatemala.

You can access Villahermosa, located at 863 kilometres from the City of Mexico, by the following means of transportation:
  • By air: the Capitan Carlos A. Rovirosa International Airport, at 15 kilometres from Villahermosa, gets an average of 300 weekly flights coming from the main cities of Mexico, and also from the United States.
The domestic flights come from the cities of Mexico DF (the capital of the country), Veracruz (State of Veracruz), Oaxaca (State of Oaxaca), Tuxtla Gutierrez (State of Chiapas), Merida (State of Yucatan), Cancun (State of Quintana Roo) and Puebla (State of Puebla).
Regarding international itineraries, Villahermosa gets daily flights coming from Houston and Texas, in the United States, and from the City of Havana as well, though they are less frequent.
Some of the airlines landing in Villahermosa are Aeromexico, Mexicana, Aerocaribe and Aviacsa, amongst others.
Once at the airport, travellers will find a series of services, such as modules providing tourist information, bank and financial offices, public phone booths, medic service 24 hours a day, installations for the disabled, shops and restaurants.
In order to get to the city centre, choose between the taxis and the units of public transportation (minivans and collectives) that are parked on the outskirts of the air terminal.

Useful Information of Villahermosa
  • By land: all the roads, or almost, lead to the City of Villahermosa, a forced stop for those travellers going to the Yucatan Peninsula (in southeast Mexico), or to the border with Guatemala (east side), by land.
For this reason, an efficient system of federal highways connects it with the neighbouring cities and with the border pass to Guatemala. But this is not all; the road system includes secondary roads that lead to the interior of the State of Tabasco.
In total, the road system of Tabasco stretches for 8222 kilometres of highways (amongst federal, state and municipal), being one of the states with the best road infrastructure in the country.
In order to access Villahermosa coming from the City of Mexico, one has to take Federal Highway 180; the trip is south-easterly bound and the Cities of Puebla and Veracruz, amongst others, are crossed during the 863-kilometre journey.
The vehicles bound for Villahermosa from the City of Mexico, set off from the Passenger Bus Terminal of the Orient (TAPO), located on 200 Zaragoza Street, San Lazaro Metro.
If you are on the Yucatan Peninsula, you must follow Federal Highway 180, though in the opposite direction, meaning from east to west.

  • By sea or river: it is not a usual way of arriving in Villahermosa, though nonetheless vessels of different sizes and private yachts anchor sporadically at the off shore port known as Dos Bocas.
Likewise, the course of the Grijalva River, which runs alongside the city, connects Villahermosa with several minor towns, located on the riverbanks of the powerful torrent.
