MUSEUMS

La Quemada Field Museum: its rooms show the evolution of the archaeological studies realised in the region and the development of the pre Hispanic cultures that populated Zacatecas; human groups that left traces of their presence in the compounds of Loma San Gabriel, Chalchihuites and La Quemada.
In one of its rooms you will find drawings of the original structure of the archaeological compound of La Quemada, made by German national Carlos de Berges in 1834. The work was commissioned by the governor, Francisco Garcia Salinas, and it has been used to accomplish important restoration works along the years.
It also displays a panoramic model of the ancient edifices of the zone: the Hall of Columns, the Ball Game, the Votive Pyramid, the Headquarters, the Palace, the Citadel and the Wall, which had an approximate length of 800 metres.
The museum, inaugurated in 1995, has a projection room and another for temporary exhibitions, besides a large terrace and a handicrafts' shop. The architecture of all the ambiences harmonically conjugates the pre Hispanic constructions and the natural setting of the zone.

Manuel Felguérez Museum of Abstract Art: there are more than one hundred paintings and sculptures made by this artist from Zacatecas, pioneer of abstract art in Mexico, who donated the artworks he completed along his four decades of work, in its eleven rooms, along with an extremely rich collection of other artists.
The museum, inaugurated in 1998, has the Room of the Zacatecans, an interesting collection of abstract paintings by masters Pedro and Rafael Coronel, Ismael Guardado, Alfonso Lopez Monreal, Francisco de Santiago and Alejandro Nava, amongst others.
Its seat is the former Conciliar Seminary of the Purest of Zacatecas; built in the XIX century, it was refurbished between 1997 and 2001 with the addition of some modern elements that created an original museum space.

Museum of Zacatecas: this small bastion of culture opened its doors in 1995 to exhibit more than 150 Huichole embroideries, pieces that belonged to US doctor Enrique F. Mertens, who lived with this ethnic group for several years.
During their coexistence Mertens asked the women to embroider the cloaks he provided them with; there they imprinted the icons of the Huichole religion and a series of original and flashy designs. This most valuable collection remained in Zacatecas thanks to the intervention of Federico Sescosse.
Other attractions in the museum are the altarpieces or popular offerings from the XIX century, and about 196 religious paintings donated by Fernando Benitez. There is a sample of Mexican blacksmith from the XVI and XVII centuries standing out in the room dedicated to Rafael Tovar Villagorda; photomurals about the Huichole people by Juan Victor Arauz and 70 photographs of the Huichole world from the Lilly Archive.
Its seat is the former Mint of Zacatecas (1810-1905), which was regarded as the second in importance in Mexico.
